You might not give much thought to the baseboards in your home. However, baseboards play a significant role in the character and transitions throughout your space.

If you want to add a little more wow factor to your home, upgrading and getting creative with baseboard moulding is an excellent, affordable option.

9 Creative Ways to Use Baseboard Moulding

Here we share nine creative ways to use baseboard moulding in your home décor to add impact, stylishness, and sophistication.

1. The Old Fake Out Using Existing Baseboards

If you’re on a tight budget, you can upgrade existing baseboards with a “faux” baseboard. Check out trim choices such as ½ round, various door stops, or something more substantial like chair rails

Choose a design that suits your taste and budget. Install your choice of trim a few inches above your existing baseboards, then paint out the new baseboard, the wall between the new and existing trim, and your baseboards the same colour, and voila, instant beefed-up, elegant baseboards!

To ensure your upgrade doesn’t appear too obvious, take a few of your preferred trim options home and hold them up to your baseboards to see what looks the most appealing.

Tip: When using door stops, you’ll likely need to install them with the flat side facing toward the ceiling to mimic typical baseboard aesthetics.

2. Go, Tall, Flat and Plain

Today, simple lines offer a clean look that works in modern and traditional settings. A flat, simple, and tall baseboard at around 6” is a striking addition to any home. You’d be surprised how effectively that simple board creates a feeling of coziness.

It also draws attention to your floors and is an excellent addition to new floor installation projects.

Suppose you’ve jumped on the large-scale wallpaper bandwagon. In that case, busy wallpaper demands a simple baseboard that won’t compete with the design. Tall, flat, and plain is the answer!

3. Layer Tall Baseboards

Instead of using a single baseboard, consider creating more impact with layered baseboards. Layered baseboards are especially effective with oversized baseboards 12 inches or taller.

Using shorter baseboards installed over your tall baseboards adds depth and interest while making the baseboards feel “finished.” You can also include a topper trim above the baseboard for a truly bespoke, luxurious look. We highly recommend this look for rooms with high ceilings to help pull the room together.

Short baseboards in rooms with ceilings over 10 feet look stunted and puny, translating into a lower-budget look that takes away from the elegance of your space.

4. Go Rogue – Upgrade Your Kitchen!

Baseboards work beautifully as a trim solution for all “millwork” projects. This outside-of-the-box approach uses less conventional trim applications, such as ramping up kitchen cabinets.

Baseboard mouldings affixed to the bottom of your upper cabinets create a finished look.

It’s a great way to hide under cabinet lighting or add a more regal, bespoke look to old, boring kitchen cabinets. Baseboard moulding also works to trim kitchen ventilation fans, frame out the ceiling over kitchen islands, add more interest to the ceiling to highlight pendant lights, and more.

5. Upgrade Your Bathroom Mirror

If you have a basic builder’s mirror in your bathroom sans a frame, you can build a customized frame using your choice of baseboards. Install the frame over the mirror and paint it black to add drama, silver or gold for a touch of elegance, white for a soft look, or any colour that complements your bathroom design.

Tip: Use corner blocks to avoid awkward math, trying to figure out the correct measurements and cuts.

6. Customized Wall Panels

Create customized wall panels to break up large walls in your home. Baseboard moulding and other trim options can create endless wall panel designs, adding interest, a sense of elegance, and a customized look to your home.

Wall panels are classic and commonly used in dining rooms, hallways, and stairwells. But they work in any room or area in your house.

7. Create Custom Window and Door Trim

You can use moulding to create custom window and door trim designs throughout your home. Whether you go with a plain, flat baseboard at the bottom and sides and a more ornate top, use the same trim for the entire frame, or try our faux idea to build out existing trim, you can add unique character to an otherwise dull room.

It’s a small detail, but when carried throughout your home, it becomes a very noted detail that is impactful and distinct.

8. Faux Your Crown Moulding

If your home’s crown moulding is short and plain, you can build it up using various styles of baseboards and trim.

Using the same premise as our first idea, you install the new trim a few inches below your existing crown moulding, then paint out the wall and new frame to create the illusion of a grander crown moulding.

If you don’t have crown moulding, you can choose a more affordable style of simple crown moulding and customize it with our faux tip. Price everything out to see what design or solution suits your budget.

9. Create a Focal Point

You can square off an area on a wall and then install trim in an intricate design to add texture and create a focal point. This tip works well behind your oven, over a fireplace, or on a large wall. You can use it to create a feeling of separation in open-concept spaces. In this case, use your moulding to design a strip about a foot wide running from floor to ceiling.

Using these creative ideas for inspiration, you can add more character to your home for standout design details that are distinctive and stylish.
